[LPJ Design] The Obsidian Twilight: A Place Beyond Hell sourcebook patron project
The project's main designer, Louis Porter Jr., has been involved in the RPG industry for the last decade starting with the creation and development of Haven: City of Violence campaign setting, which is the only RPG to receive a movie option by Radical Comics owner, Barry Levine, before the setting was released. Louis Porter Jr over the last decade has release over 500 RPG related products in both the traditional brick and mortar retail store and the online PDF market. In addition, James “Grim” Desborough of Postmortem Studios; who also wrote on the Obsidian Twilight campaign setting will be the head writer on this project. Porter and Desborough hope the Obsidian Twilight: A Place Beyond Hell sourcebook can emulate the excitement and interest in this product as they did with the first campaign setting book.
Concept
At its most basic level, this project is about adding another level of fear to the playability of Obsidian Twilight. Unlike most game design projects, the Obsidian Twilight: A Place Beyond Hell sourcebook project will have the direct input of fans from the very beginning. If you choose to back this project, you will have not only behind-the-scenes looks at the development process but also the opportunity to shape the final product through playtesting rules to provide direct feedback, and even contributing content for the game.
Why is it necessary to involve fans into the creation and development at such an early stage? This will only help strengthen the quality of the final delivery of this project. With the involvement of the internet, it makes it possible to move development and design from a central location with a small group to an “open arena” where may different voice and opinions can be voiced and commented on. Best of all the monsters and rules for the setting can be playtested in various styles and conditions, which only helps make the project better and better.
Objective
The goal of the Obsidian Twilight: A Place Beyond Hell sourcebook project is to create new group of monsters and villains that supports the Obsidian Twilight setting with a horror and psionics base to them. The Obsidian Twilight: A Place Beyond Hell sourcebook will be able to easily be inserted into your local Obsidian Twilight home game, or place in to whatever setting you might want to use it in. The Choice is yours.
The Obsidian Twilight: A Place Beyond Hell sourcebook will be a large softcover book (at least 48 pages) with a full color cover and interior artwork (for the PDF version) and illustrated black-and-white interior art work (for the Print-On-Demand version), and a target retail price of $14.95. In addition, the Obsidian Twilight: A Place Beyond Hell sourcebook will be available for download, most likely as a PDF for $9.95. (Additional formats, such as that used by Amazon's Kindle, are also being considered.) The target date for publication is late October or early November of 2010, allowing the game to be available for purchase in time for the holiday season.
Patronage and Funding
I like many who have used kickstarter.com, have decided to follow the example of Wolfgang Baur and use a "patronage model" for this project. Basically put, those who are interested in the project can "buy in" at the beginning, giving them admittance to (and influence on) the design process at all stages and once an adequate number of patrons have pledged their support, the project moves forward. The funding goal is to raise $3,000 in roughly 8 weeks.
The fundraising goal $3,000 is the bare minimum that I believe can move the project forward; ultimately, I hope the project will raise several times this amount, primarily through book sales after publication. The amount by which I exceed the $3,000 goal will help to determine how large a print run I can afford as well as how much work I can afford to farm out to freelancers who want to contribute to the project’s design.
If you are interested in joining the Obsidian Twilight: A Place Beyond Hell sourcebook patron project, Go to out Kickstarter page and sign up or learn more about this patron project. Thank you for your support.

So what is going on with Obsidian Twilight...
Good News: I have gotten a lot of good feedback on people donating blood for this project. For all of you who have done it or are planning to do it, Thank you. You are saving a life.
Bad News: Well we are kind of at a deadstop stand still. Bad US economy. Low sales at all the PDF sale websites for business cashflow. Writer and artistis issues. Just about everything that can go wrong on this project has. So I have been working on it all myself pushing it along SLOWLY. Now with the added work of Grand Theft Exodus, Obsidian Twilight has moved down in priority. BUT HAVE NO FEAR!!! We are putting out Obsidian Twilight. It might take longer then planned, BUT IT IS COMING OUT. So don't worry. Thanks for your support. Talk to you later...

Well it looks like Obsidian Twilight has a cover artist…

We have been talking about it for a while and we have made a gentleman’s agreement in place, so I can finally announce it. It is my sincere pleasure to announce the cover artist for Obsidian Twilight is Mr. Gonzalo Ordonez Arias AKA Genzoman. As you can see his artwork falls very much in line with the ideas and concepts that I wanted to present with this setting. I am planning for Obsidian Twilight to be released on Halloween 2009 with an adventure called All Evil’s Eve also being release around the same time. I can’t wait until we start releasing sample information on Obsidian Twilight. I think people will be pleasantly pleased. Also remember you can still sign up for the Patronage Program with Obsidian Twilight and get you copy way before any one else. So don’t delay because this will not last for ever. Talk to you later…

Stealing back from Steven, whom he stole back from me, which I stole from Wolfgang and Steven...and now Monte Cook.
OK, the title says it all on this one, so if you can't understand it here is the short version to get you caught up:
- Wolfgang Baur came up with the idea of doing patron projects for his RPG Business.
- Steven took the patron project idea, modified it and applied it to his products for his RPG Business and product Lands of the Jade Oath.
- I took Steven's modified patron project idea and modified it again to create my own patron project for Obsidian Twilight.
- Then Steven took back my modified modification of the patron project and started using it for his upcoming Pathfinder Compatibility License patronage project.
But now, I am modifying the modified modification of the patron project (Thanks to Monte Cook) and now we have...
The Ultimate Modification of the Patron Project Stolen (I mean Liberated) idea! Here it is:
You do the patron project (like Wolfgang and Steven) but you base it on a multi-payment system (like LPJ Design) but you put it online at a subscription based website (like Monte) so people can look at you developing the product from the ground up. And since this is a business blog, I have to show where and why that is a good idea to do business wise, so here goes:
Instead of charging a one-time $50 for a person to get behind the scenes and see what is going on and get access to the patron project, you charge the person on a low subscription fee (like $4-10 per month) and give them all kinds of new stuff each week or twice a week, (Every day can be a bit of over load to me but Monte does it well) but keep it up for only one month (30 days) after that take the released material down. So the longer you stay a subscriber the more you get and at the same time people who just come in for one month can’t just grab everything and bail for the low monthly price. Now on the business side, you can keep this site going on forever if you keep releasing product and material for it and when you get ready you can collect parts of it for PDF and Lulu.com based products.
This program would work very well if you wanted to do a “living campaign” like Living Arcanis or Pathfinder Society community. You could submit adventures to subscribed members in this fashion and have they play them at conventions of whatever. I think I could build the NeoExodus: A House Divided and Obsidian Twilight living campaigns they same way. Well I guess this is going to be a busy summer for me. Talk to you later…

[Obsidian Twilight] Accepting Patrons for the Obsidian Twilight Parton Program
Louis Porter Jr. Design, in association with Devil’s Workshop, the Obsidian Twilight Patron Project is now accepting patrons for this project. The Obsidian Twilight Patron Project is inspired from asking the question, “If I combine the Dark Sun and Ravenloft settings, I get...” And from that source inspiration the setting of Obsidian Twilight was born.“Being a huge fan of the D20/OGL license and the creative openness it brought to the world of RPGs, LPJ Design wanted to do another d20/OGL setting that the fan would love to play, but was really for a specific niche of player. With the 3.5 edition license for Ravenloft reverted back to WOTC and a 3.5 edition Dark Sun only being release as a one-time Paizo created product, a lot of rabid fans of those setting were missing their fix of gaming in those settings, when WOTC when to the 4.0 GSL edition. And I was one of those people who who loved both of the 3.5 OGL versions of the setting and didn't like the changes to 4.0 GSL,” commented Louis Porter Jr., owner of Louis Porter Jr. Design. “With the patron project concept created up by Wolfgang Baur, it seems that it would be a perfect application with Obsidian Twilight.”
As part of the creation process of Obsidian Twilight, LPJ Design will share the manuscript as it evolves over time (and the whole manuscript with some patrons). A Patron Project is a way to look inside the RPG design process, and to suggest changes to it as it is being written, developed and created. Interested parties buy in as patrons of the project. When the project reaches a threshold number of patrons, the project starts moving forward full force. The first manuscript will be open to patrons for play-testing. Patrons will choose which sections will be supported by interior artwork, and look over the shoulders of designers, editors and layout artists to offer suggestions and guidance on the various directions the project could take.
When you order, no matter the patron level, you will send an email to LMPjr007@aol.com confirming that you purchased the patronage, tell us what e-mail you used to purchase the patronage via Paypal.com and what email we should use to contact you with. After that we will inform you with further instruction on what to do. You can choose from four different levels of patronage to support this project. [LPJ Design] Owen K.C. Stephens hired to work on Obsidian Twilight
“I have worked with Owen on several NeoExodus: A House Divided projects and found him to be an excellent person with a lot of ground-breaking style. I think his knowledge and experience with roleplaying games will be a great asset to the work we are doing on this project.” commented Louis Porter Jr., owner of Louis Porter Jr. Design. “I'm excited to bring him on this Obsidian Twilight patron project. His unlimited inventiveness, originality and amazing understanding of the rules will help position Louis Porter Jr. Design as leaders in the Patron Project RPG business. With the skills and abilities that Owen brings will complement the talent of the other writers, Joshua Cole, Neal Bailey and Chris Field.”
Owen Kirker Clifford Stephens was born in 1970 in Norman, Oklahoma. He was introduced to gaming by his uncle in 1978 (though his uncle now claims no memory of the event) and was instantly hooked. Owen moved with his wife and three cats to the Seattle area in 2000 after accepting a job as a Game Designer at Wizards of the Coast. While there, he worked on numerous Star Wars Roleplaying Game projects and the Wheel of Time Roleplaying Game. He has written freelance for numerous companies, including White Wolf and Steve Jackson Games.
Owen's gaming credits include d20 Critical Locations, d20 Cyberscape, Advanced Player's Manual, The Black Company, EverQuest Player's Handbook, Murder at the Vulgar Unicorn, Power of the Jedi Sourcebook and Star Wars Arms and Equipment Guide.
