Stuff I'm working on - New Feat - Atheist

Just a liitle thing I am working on.  Let me know what you think about it. Talk to you later...

New Feat: Atheist

You disbelieve the existence of all gods to the point that divine magic has little effect on you.

Prerequisite: Cannot follow the tenets of any religion, cannot have class levels in a divine spellcasting class that requires the worship of a god (such as cleric).

Benefit: You gain a +2 resistance bonus on saving throws against spells cast by divine spellcasters.

Drawback: While you can still receive healing spells, your disbelief in an afterlife of any sort, or of any gods, prevents you from being raised or resurrected. You can only be returned to life with a wish spell.

  1. IMO unless you've been at deaths door ....

There is probably some truth in .. "you do not find an atheist in a fox hole."

Anyway, to have this feat suggests the character could have a solid philosophical doctrine(s) on what is SELF, Ethics, Morality, Death and Dying, Philanthropy, Politics, Subjectivity versus Objectivity, What is Truth, Existence.

Why would a character with this feat even be adventuring? To know there is only one life ... why would the character partake in this lifestyle. What is the motivation?

Resistance if not outright immunity to divine healing/injury IMO requires a higher developed "self". One not typical of an adventurer.

How does this character view the undead? How do they explain divine healing or character resurrection amongst the other members of the adventuring party?

What is the characters response to seeing the undead in battle, or character resurrection in the party?

This character has to view the world very differently from the other party members.

What would even bring them together? This character is a liability to the party. Doesn't believe in the power of divine artifacts, so they would not use them to heal party members if the option presented itself.

How does the character view Arcane magic and Arcane creatures?

The Arcane and Divine are deep veins in the Fantasy World.

A true Atheist would be a rare character.

    MY 2 cents

  2. The presence of gods in most games (assuming Pathfinder) in such an overt manner would indicate an atheist as delusional. I could see something where someone hates the divine but to pretend it isn't there in a game full of clerics, gods and outsiders...wow. The feats seem half-hearted in a way. I might rename it God-hater and then have "you hate the gods so much that divine magic has little effect on you." or something and keep it or increase resistance bonus and then say healing spells do not work or only heal a small percentage.

  3. To be fair, now you must make these too:

Buddhist: auto-resurrect in new randomly determined character, but keep all XP

Christian: single auto-resurrect after 3 days, but only sticks around for a few hours before going to heaven. Vulnerable to nails.

Unitarian: can cast any divine spells without level limits, but hated by all other clerics for being too wishy-washy.

    and so on....

  4. I wonder if any helpful divine spells would even be allowed to work on an atheist character. In a fantasy world, the gods would probably punish the character so.
