OH NO! He's drinking the Kool-Aid of my Predictions of Doom! He is talking about 5e already? 5e! OH NO! You are bashing 4e! http://jpchapleau.blogspot.com/2011/02/predictions-of-doom-4e-rpga-lfr.html and http://jpchapleau.blogspot.com/2011/02/predictions-of-doom-4e-is-new-coke.html
Good to hear specific numbers on those PDFs. It was useful to hear, thanks.
Oh, and that's Robert Khoo, not Richard Khoo and Penny Arcade, not PvP. :)
Also, I disagree on the 5e comments. I seriously think that DDI is a game changer and has the potential to allow WotC to break away from the old business model of churning out a new edition to generate sales.
If anything, I can see DDI opening up to support ALL editions of D&D before WotC tries a new edition. If it does open up DDI, it would change the entire table top gaming landscape. They'll be able to sweep Pathfinder, other OGL systems and earlier edition grognards back under their influence and charge them money.
Heck, we're already seeing the increased focus on D&D related non-book sales (board games, D&D cards, etc), which is fitting, considering the collapse of traditional book sales and retail channels. Looking at their recent actions, I think WotC is in the process of de-emphasizing book sales as a major part of their income stream.
Their recent hires of several computer guys (instead of more game developers) to support DDI seems to show where their priorities currently lie.
