The last rough pieces of artwork for Obsidian Apocalypse!!

Just like the title says, this is it. Enjoy! Talk to you later...

The PDF Rewards With "At Cost Print on Demand" for Supporters New Trend for RPG Kickstarters

I guess I am late with this one, but have people seen this post at Tenkar’s Taven: A New Trend in RPG Kickstarters? - PDF Rewards With"At Cost Print on Demand" for Supporters. Apparently our friends of at Rite Publishing where the first to attempt this and now Amethyst - Fantasy & Technology Collide is doing the same thing. OK I have to admit I am a little confused by this.  Not by what they are suggesting but why people feel this in “innovative” or a “new trend”?

We at LPJ Design send out our print books to people via CreateSpace / Amazon. Rite Publishing is doing the same thing but adding RPGNow.com in to the equation.

So with us it is: LPJ Design > CreateSpace / Amazon > Donor.

With Rite Publishing it is: Rite > RPGNow > Lightning Source > Donor.

I don’t see the need or desire for the added step because RPGNow is going to charge Rite for this service of doing the POD books for them.  I use RPGNow and a PDF distributor of product and CreateSpace as my POD distributor. It just makes better sense to me to do that. I mean if RPGNow charged me 10% to do that “service” on a $20 book that’s $2 per book. If Lightning Source cost me $4 to print a book and RPGNow just added 50% more to my production cost of the book.

I mean getting the books at cost is a “good thing” (I assume they are charging people at the $6 RPGNow add-on versus the Lightning Source $4 cost) but are any of these books going to show up on the retailer shelves, meaning can retailers buy the book at cost during this Kickstarter?  I mean it is one thing to offer this to the limited amount of donors that support your kickstarter, but it is complexly different to offer this to your retailer where the margin between the wholesale and the retail, or even to distributors, can be where you make your money. Like I said before. I am a little confused about this whole thing. Talk to you later…

[LPJ Design] Adventure Path Iconics: Path of Undeath (PFRPG) Now available

Louis Porter Jr. Design has released its newest product, Adventure Path Iconics for the Pathfinder the gothic and horror-themed adventure path and the Obsidian Apocalypse (PFRPG) campaign setting at RPGNow.com and DriveThruRPG.com.  Here is information on this product:

This is the next installment of our Adventure Path Iconics line, and the seven characters herein are specifically designed for play in the Obsidian Apocalypse campaign setting and the gothic and horror-themed Adventure Path. Each character has a full stat block, including campaign traits, a detailed background and personality, and advice on advancement through 4th level. Find one that suits you and you’re ready to play. These characters have been built using a 20-point buy, as many Pathfinder players and GMs prefer it. However, each comes with instructions on how to adjust the stats to a 15-point buy, should your GM wish to use the standard for Paizo’s adventure paths. If your group enjoys an epic fantasy feel for their characters, then adjustments up to a 25-point buy are also available. Whatever your style of play, just a few minor tweaks will have you ready to go.

The iconic consist of seven unique races from the Obsidian Apocalypse campaign setting such as:
Exalted: The exalted are the direct offspring of angelic outsiders mated with the humans of Abaddon. The unique circumstances of Abaddon make this pairing a more common event than it might be in other parts of the multiverse. The angels here are thrust into closer contact with mortals than they are used to, cut off from the gods and entities that they serve and forced to make new lives for themselves.
  • Genesai: Genesai are the result of demonic outsiders mating with angelic outsiders, defying all that both sides of the eternal conflict between good and evil consider inviolate. In other worlds and planes of existence, this pairing might be all but unthinkable, but the nature of Abaddon as a “planar trap” throws these opposites together far more often than elsewhere. Whatever the agents of good and evil have against reach other, as outsiders they at least share the same origin.
  • Harrowed: The harrowed are one of the most despised and feared races of Abaddon. They are no less than the result of the unholy and abominable union between mortal humanoids and the foul undead. To the subjugated populace, the very existence of the harrowed is a constant reminder of their undead overlords who have taken over Abaddon. These creatures are royal bastards, neither fully mortal nor fully undead, caught between the two worlds.
  • Infernals: Infernals are the offspring of demonic outsiders and humanity upon Abaddon or the result of a tainted bloodline throwing up a child bearing the mark of past transgressions of natural law. Infernals are relatively common on Abaddon, given the nature of the world as a “planar trap” and the natural proclivities of the demons who find themselves here, as they are trapped, frustrated, and have only a few playthings to assuage their boredom.
  • Khymer: The khymer are descendants of those killed, or at least physically destroyed, by the meteor that struck Abaddon. The necromantic radiation emanating from the blast had many long-lasting effects on Abaddon and its people. For the inhabitants of one city, though, it meant liquefaction followed by mingling with the ravening light. This process infused the liquid remains with negative energy, which coupled with the latent remnants of that people’s native psionic abilities.
  • Lykian: Abaddon’s werewolf lycanthropes, most commonly called lykians, are one of the most unusual residents of the world. Unlike standard lycanthropes, lykians are born as lycanthropes. They do not suffer from the lycanthropic disease; instead, they are considered a separate humanoid race with the shapechanger subtype. Before the apocalypse, many carried the curse of lycanthropy, but due to unknown, powerful forces of magic, the curse took on a new form from which the lykians have evolved directly. Lykians, unlike lycanthropes, have only one physical form, despite their shapechanger subtype. They are considered by many to be extremely bestial, hostile, and brutish, like their canine lineage. Their primal nature often usurps and controls their cognitive and reasoning abilities.
  • Osirian: According to ancient lore, the osirians were the first intelligent species to emerge on Abaddon, chosen by the gods to be their first creation on this world. They were, and are, a regal and proficient people famed for their skill with their hands and their swiftness, as dangerous archers and fencers and makers of technical wonders and fine crafts.
These iconic consist of:
  • Ilita Faara, Female khymer psychic warrior
  • Mik’quol an-str-natk, Male osirian cleric (Zebediah)
  • Mouse, Female genesai rogue
  • Setiphet Sir Lykash, Female harrowed fighter
  • (Treeshearer) Snarltooth Swifttongue, Female lykian ranger
  • Xasturian, Male infernal sorcerer
  • Yeremil Al Zebediah, Male exalted monk

The Obsidian Apocalypse iconics are edited and in layout

I received the four iconics last night and have been work on their layout to make sure all of you who donated at Ghast ($35) or higher will get them by this weekend.

In addition, to the four iconics we are sending out to donors, we created an addition three iconics that we are combining with the original four to create the upcoming Adventure Path Iconics: Path of Undeath. Our Adventure Path Iconics series had been selling so well we thought it made sense to make a full list of iconic characters that would be perfect to use in the several Gothic and Horror themed adventure paths on the market. I mean let’s be honest, the races of Obsidian Apocalypse are a quantum leap about in imagination then the typical race you see in fantasy. I mean you can even compare the coolness of the Exalted or Khymer to a dwarf or elf. Obsidian Apocalypse really kicks it up a notch. As always thanks for your support of this kickstarter and LPJ Design. Talk to you later…

Did you know about the Kickstarter Faliures with big names attached to them?

I was over at Tenkar’s Tavern and read this post, KickstarterFailures - The RPG Corner is Beginning to Pile Up With Them (Nystul HasCompany) and I have to admit I was shocked. I mean I knew there were all kinds of kickstarters that failed to product their products. But I never knew so many of them were by “named” gaming people.  If you want to get a bad feeling read through the comment section at the bottom. I will wait…

WOW! Right. How many of those names did you know? How many of those were toted and being BIG projects with their success? Well I guess I better double my efforts so that I don’t get on this list.  Talk to you later….

Races of NeoExodus campaign setting are coming to D20pfsrd.com

So after months of discussion and conversations with the other members of LPJ Design, we have decided to put the races for the NeoExodus: A House Divided campaign setting online at D20opfsrd.com as content you can see and use, completely for free.

The reason for us doing this came done to the simple idea of, we believe NeoExodus is the most innovative 3PP campaign setting on the market today. We also know what makes NeoExodus so good is that it’s not attempting to be a traditional fantasy setting that you have played in time after time after time again.  We made NeoExodus to be something that was completely unique and that started first and foremost with the races we created. The nine races that were created (Cavian, Cynean, Dalrean, Enuka, Gevet, Kalisan, P’Tan, Prymidian and Sasori) really set the tone of what made this world and setting wholly different. Being so singular of a fantasy setting, that may have scared some potential players off without knowing and understanding how they could find a NeoExodus race similar to a typical fantasy race they are used to play.  The LPJ Design members knew that the NeoExodus races, while unique, had their own iconic roles to play and would relate well to the players. So we thought it would be best to share the experience of NeoExodus with our races via the already powerful and impressive D20pfsrd.com. It was a match made in heaven actually..

We expect that these NeoExodus races will be online in the very near future. You will be able to check out what we have created and how you can incorporate those races and concepts that into your home game. As always. I want to thank you for your support of LPJ Design and you get many years of enjoyment using and playing with our NeoExodus races.

NeoExodus Adventures: Silvered Skull (PFRPG) Adventure Now available

Nestled high in the Grit Mountains, the village of Oldenhaffen is known far and wide for the quality of its wool. The town elders have sent for urgent help from their absent lord, who unable to respond, needs trustworthy adventurers to investigate. Ever since a local shepherd brought back a silvered cavian skull, things have become... distressing. Townsfolk who touched the skull are now dazed and babbling incoherently, and the villagers are worried this is a sign of an incipient curse about to grow worse. A psionic NeoExodus adventure for 3rd-level characters.

Digital only rewards for Table Top RPG for kickstarters? What do you think?

I wanted to get fans of Pathfinder Kickstarter and donors opinion on this topic:

What do you think about doing digital only rewards? For example, a typical kickstarter has a printed RPG campaign book  as the reward with other "created" material like dice, t-shirts, maps and other various things like those.

But instead of those typical things, a kickstarter just has rewards that are digitally based including a PDF version of the campaign book, expanded PDF add-ons to the book, ebook, MP3 music and items like that. Only the RPG campaign book is the “real” printed product. What do people think about that? Let us know. Thanks!

[LPJ Design] Adventure Path Iconics: Path of Pirates (PFRPG) Now available

Louis Porter Jr. Design has released its newest product, Adventure Path Iconics for the Pathfinder winter focused adventure path and the NeoExodus: A House Divided (PFRPG) campaign setting at RPGNow.com and DriveThruRPG.com.  Here is information on this product:

This is the fourth installment of our Adventure Path Iconics line, and the eight characters herein are specifically designed for play in a pirate-themed Adventure Path.

The iconic consist of four human characters and four unique races from the NeoExodus: A House Divided campaign setting such as:
  • Dalrean: Dalrean are a race of sentient, mobile plants. If a treant is a thinking tree, a dalrean is a thinking flower, and indeed, the spellcasters of this race are noted for their astonishing floral ‘spellbuds.’ Dalrean, who live exceedingly long lives, are closely tied to the natural cycles of Exodus.
  • Enuka: The most primal and barbaric of the savage humanoids have nothing on the Enukas. Enukas are ferocious creatures of the wild lands, animalistic predators blessed with humanoid form an intelligence. This combination has not softened their instincts for battle and the hunt, but it has given them a fatalistic warrior culture well suited to their savage natures.
  • Prymidian: Prymidians are regal, red-skinned humanoids. Their stately demeanor and formidable build impress other races and their learning follows suit. The prymidians are a communication and language-inclined race, dedicated to scientific reason, research, expansion of knowledge and discovery. Their culture seeks to know all there is to know in Exodus, and to communicate that knowledge to others. None know better than the prymidians that knowledge truly is power.
  • Sasori: Resources wax and wane, weapons and spells become obsolete, the master craftsman of one era is displaced by the industry of the next, and even land becomes worthless with the shifting ages - information, say the Sasori, is the one commodity that is always in demand. These scorpion-like creatures are brokers of information, by turns the greatest secret-keepers and the supreme spies of Exodus. Sasori are also known for their willingness - and ability - to kill to protect their secrets.

 These iconic consist of:
  • Bale Tehya, Male prymidian bard (sea singer)
  • Bilgeghost, Female sasori monk
  • Flowing Kelp, Male dalrean sorcerer
  • Shark-Stalker, Male enuka barbarian
  • Trista Rask, Female human gunslinger
  • Sabine Finn, Female human druid of the God of Storms and Seas (shark shaman)
  • Ral Fayden, Human ranger (freebooter)
  • Salty Jake, Male human rogue (poisoner)

These images have me thinking about insect humanoid races...

So for some CRAZY reason I am thinking about all kinds of things I can have in the upcoming Codex: Torment. The one creature/monster that people have said they DON’T want are “insect humanoids”. But for some reason my head keeps saying, “You know, you should do a real cool take on insect humanoids.” So of course I have been thinking of ways I can make insect humanoid interesting. The images you see here are really what I think of when I think insect humanoids. Maybe there is something here. Maybe I am just crazy. Maybe I have a cool concept to add to them like the ability to see and perceive beyond the illusions of life such as the "illusions" of distance, sound, light and even time or physical obstacles to be able to locate anything. Maybe something is here. Maybe there are few good ideas for that old Pirates of the Bronze Sky idea I had a few years ago. I guess we will have to wait and see. Talk to you later…

Missed Kickstarter opportunities – one major, one minor for Pathfinder!!!

Two kickstarters that I have been interested have just gone live at kickstarter: The Unhallowed Horror Fantasy Roleplaying Adventure Path and Dragon Kings. OK while both of these went live BOTH of them missed something very simple and easy. Neither of them in their titles actual mention the words “Pathfinder” in them. While I was able to find The Unhallowed searching the work Pathfinder, I was not able to find Dragon Kings unless I searched for the name “Dragon Kings”. While this is a minor issue, it is something that could have been handled is seconds.

While the previous issue was minor, here are a major issue for BOTH of these kickstarters. While looking over the rewards for The Unhallowed Endzeitgeist on the Paizo forum brought up this issue:

Also: Ships within US only? :/ I would contemplate joining for dead tree, but since all options for dead-tree are US-exclusive, I guess that's not possible. Please contemplate adding a level for your international demographic.

Come on no shipping outside the US? Guys it is 2013 you can mail things worldwide for a “reasonable price”. Forget overseas, you guys wouldn’t even ship to Canada? Why would you not let Canadian and oversea donors get what they want? That is a MAJOR missed opportunity.

Dragon Kings even out did this missed opportunity. Here is what I wrote in a Paizo forum post :

It is up now!!!......BUT I noticed that they DON'T have a level where I can just get the World Book PDF ONLY. At $70 (the lowest level where I can the world book PDF) I can get a LOT of stuff, but I just want the world book PDF. PLEASE make a level for just the world book pdf. Thanks!

The cheapest PDF version I can get is $70? And with that, a major opportunity missed to get my money and apparently several other donors who felt the same way in that thread. Guys, put in a $20 PDF only version and get all that money you are “leaving on the table”.  I am sure they will reach their goal but I am sure they could have done it A LOT faster with that little change.  Talk to you later…
