Introducing NeoExodus Novella written by Robin D. Laws

The world of Exodus needs heroes. Suit up with your armor, gather your weapons and enter into the neo-fantasy world of danger and excitement with NeoExodus Novellas. NeoExodus Novellas is both a serial web fiction and official novels that expand the mesmerizing magical and fascinating would of the role playing setting of NeoExodus: A House Divided. For the first time the world of Exodus comes alive in stories of powerful arcane magic, conflicting mighty empires with political intrigue, where anyone can have a remarkable effect on the world. The NeoExodus Novellas series are standalone voyages and exploits written by fantasy's bestselling authors in the field. The first NeoExodus Novella will be written by the world famous fantasy writer of Paizo’s Pathfinder Tales: The Worldwound Gambit and Games Workshop’s Honour of the Grave, Robin D. Laws.

What makes NeoExodus Novellas series different is it will be a Kickstarter.com Patron funded project. Those who are interested in the NeoExodus Novellas project can "buy in", giving them admittance to the design process at all stages and once an adequate number of patrons have pledged their support, the project moves forward. The funding goal is for the NeoExodus Novellas is $500 in 8 weeks. We also added-on a fundraising incentive plan to this project: If we raise more that initial $500, we will:

  • At $1,000 or more raised: Robin D Laws will write an additional 5K words for this project for a total of 10K words.
  • At $2,000 or more raised: Robin D Laws will write an additional 10K words on top of the previous word lengths for a total of 20K words. We will also reduce the price of the ePub version to $2.49.
  • At $3,000 or more raised: Robin D Laws will write and additional 10K words on top of the previous word lengths for a total of 30K words. We will also reduce the price of the ePub version to $1.99.
  • At $5,000 or more raised: Robin D Laws will write and additional 20K words on top of the previous word lengths for a total of 50K words. We will also reduce the price of the ePub version to $1.49 cents.

The NeoExodus Novellas Kickstarter project should be starting in the next few weeks.

[LPJ Design] Monsters of NeoExodus: Annihilation Sphere released at RPGNow.com

Louis Porter Jr. Design has released Monsters of NeoExodus: Annihilation Sphere at RPGNow.com and DriveThruRPG.com.  Here is information on this product:

The Annihilation Sphere is a unique monster on NeoExodus. The name itself conjures images of destruction and uncontrolled mayhem. The sphere itself has no name; it was named by the Cavians who found it impossible to stop. The First Ones’ archives in Kayen’te speak of an Aneishi experiment to destroy the Kaga and crush its rebellious armies in a single blow. The details of its creation, like all other Aneishi creations, are vague and incomplete. Exodite scholars believe the Aneishi have tried to recreate man’s grand magical experiment that led to the creation of the Kaga. However, the resulting experiment created something much different. This sourcebook includes:

  • Statistics, abilities and rules for a Annihilation Sphere (CR 25 & 30)
  • Statistics, abilities and rules for the Annihilation Sphere
  • Using The Annihilation Sphere  in a Campaign
  • Monster Cards
Created by Amber E. Scott and JP Chapleau with Louis Porter Jr. Available Here at RPGNow!

Redesign for the LPJ Design website

So here is the new design for the LPJ Design website . I plan to this to go live when we release the NeoExodus Campaign Book in August.  Talk to you later.

I wonder what this means for LPJ Design and NeoExodus...

I guess we will find out what this means next week, and better yet who is involved with this.  Boy won't you be surprised when you find out who it is.  Talk to you later...

I got my Kickstarter idea set up and an unusual offer...

So I am "hoping" that next week, we will be able to announce our upcoming idea for our Kickstarter project.  I think a lot of people will be interested in what we will be doing and I think you will see a lot more people attempt what I am planning. It's simple, smart and easy to execute so it makes it perfect for a small publisher to use and help grow their business.  Plus the people involved will only become more popular from it, and this is something they also can replicate.  I cannot wait.

Now on the realm of other interesting things, a well known and respected  RPG writer has offered to work for me.  The terms are very acceptable to both of us but there is only one small thing: I don't know what I want them to write.  I have NO IDEA what I want them to do.  What ever they write will not be fore NeoExodus.  We have that already covered by the writers we are currently using.  This has to be something new.  Best of all, it has to be a Pathfinder product (widest interest) and something player useful (widest potential sales).  What should we make?  So if you come up with a cool idea of a project we should do, when it is finished we will send you a copy of the project and five more LPJ Design's products for your choice.  Real simple, come up with a good idea and get free stuff.  Easier than falling down.  Can't wait to hear what you come up with.  Talk to you later...

Looks like Race Creation Cookbook days are numbered due to Paizo...

The one of the greatest TRULY resourceful PDF books that LPJ Design put out has to be the Race Creation Cookbook.  I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! The reason I made it was NOT to help people make balanced races, it was created to help ME make more balanced races.  Any race that I made before having this books was WAY overpowered. They were basically silly and I knew it. So I decided that I need a book like this and, in turn, figured other people might find this book very useful also.  With that idea and a little sweat, a few month later, we have the Race Creation Cookbook.  This book was so important to me, that when Paizo released Pathfinder, I updated it with a Pathfinder version.  So you can see, I am a real fan of this book.

But I got some BAD NEW from PaizoCon that looks like they book days are really numbered. Pazio announced they are doing a Advanced Race Guide for Pathfinder. This is the write up for this product:

This definitive sourcebook for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game provides tons of new character options for all seven “core” player character races, from archetypes that allow elf characters to explore their connection to nature and magic to feats and spells that let a dwarf character carry on the legacy of his multi-generational clan or a gnome explore her connection to the First World or delve deep into her weird obsessions.

Additionally, the Advanced Race Guide offers meaty sections on a dozen “spotlight” races that make interesting and exciting player character options, such as goblins, aasimar, tieflings, dhampyrs, drow, the elemental races from Bestiary 2, and several others.

All PC-appropriate monster races in the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, including creatures from all three Bestiaries and The Inner Sea World Guide, receive race options equivalent to those presented for the core races in the Core Rulebook, for the first time allowing players to create and play characters like merfolk, grippli, duergar, stryx, and every other appropriate monster currently in the Pathfinder game.

Lastly, the Advanced Race Guide includes an extensive section that allows players and GMs to build their own custom races, either to emulate more powerful creatures that already exist in the game or to create wholly original characters unique to their campaign. This section will be the focus of Paizo’s next major Open Playtest effort, which will kick off in late fall 2011.

It's that last paragrapgh that has me a LITTLE MORE than worried. When Paizo releases this and it becomes the "official" Race Creation Cookbook, my original is going to suffer a serious slow down in sales.  Well at least it's good to know I am a head of the curve on product planning compared to Paizo, at least in some areas. The Advanced Race Guide will not be coming out until April 2012, so It still gives me some time to make sales on such a good proejct that has sold well for me over seven years.  Well played Paizo.  Talk to you later...

Gareth-Michael Skarka's bass-ackward comment about my Kickstarter project...

Last week I made a post about how I was planning to do a Kickstarter project but I had not decided what to do it on. Gareth made a comment to it and referred to it as being "bass-ackward". Now some of you are expecting this to be a tirade again Gareth and his comments.  It's not. Who this is an interesting teaching lesson moment on two different side of business thought.  OK what is more important, the product OR the delivery system that delivers the product? Based on Gareth comment I would think he fall under the camp of "the product"; I, on the other hand would fall under the side of the "delivery system".  Let me explain this one real quick with a few questions: How many people think they can make a better burger than McDonalds? How many of you think McDonalds burgers are "bad to poor quality"? How many people think McDonalds has a better delivery system to get their burgers to the customer? If you make a better burger than McDondalds, why haven't you put them out of business?  If McDonalds burgers are of "bad to poor quality" why haven't they gone out of business?

Because it has nothing to do with the quality of the product, but everything to do with the delivery system of that product.  I think we all can agree McDonalds burgers and not that great (Their french fries are another thing completely) and you could make a better on then their at your home.  McDonalds has build a system where they can deliver burgers consistently of a certain quality of burger to all their customers in all their locations.  Best of all their system is so simple 16 year kids (abundant cheap labor) can operate the system with easy by following directions.  The system is what is important.

Let's make it easier for those who might just say McDonalds is completely different then a RPG. Gareth sells at RPGNow.com and I think he sell at his own site too. Which one of these websites do you think he sell more at, his personal website where customer could get his personal touch with each and every sale that he might make or at RPGNow.com where they get thousands of customers a day who get a constant buying experience with each and every sale? I am going to have to say I think RPGNow.com is the winner.  RPGNow has build the correct system that hundreds of vendors have used to sell to tens of thousands of customers. Kickstarter follows that same model. So Best Buy, Radio Shack, Target, Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, AMC Movies theaters and DisneyThey have built a great system where what you are "selling" does matter, the delivery system is what is important.  You might have the best product in the would, but what does it matter if no one or not enough people can get access to it to keep your business going?  Just a thought.  Talk to you later...

LPJ Design signs SIX writers and new Pathfinder Venture Captain to do work on NeoExodus...

We have been very busy over here at LPJ design on all the cool things we are doing and planning. One of the cool things we can announce is we just signed SIX all new writers to work with LPJ Design on NeoExodus!!! This finally gives JP Chapleau some time to rest and focus on his duties as creative consultant and work on the very special projects we have planned. In addition to these six all new writers, we have also sign another of JP’s brethren, the Pathfinder Society Venture Captains, to work with up at LPJ Design on NeoExodus. We think this Venture Captain will be an excellent addition to our already growing and impressive list of writers, artists and editors to the upcoming LPJ Design projects.

Plus we have had some of the classic LPJ Design writers come back and have interest in teaming up with LPJ Design on some Pathfinder supporting projects and materials. Lots of old faces and good friends coming back to do a lot of fun work to help support Paizo and Pathfinder, what could be better?

We all this going on at LPJ Design, we still managed time to build our 2011 – 2012 product releases and it looks like if everything goes well we will be releasing at least one new LPJ Design product every week for a year starting in late August / early September. We are just trying to raise the frequency and quality of our work that of other 3PP Pathfinder supporting superstars like Rite Publishing, Open Design and Super Genius Games.

Plus with all this going on, it looks like we MIGHT have finally gotten everything ready for our secret Kickstarter idea / project. If this work out we plan, this will be the BIGGEST project we have done at LPJ Design in the last few years. Keep your fingers crossed. This next 12 months are going to be a great time to be a Paizo and Pathfinder fan! Talk to you later…

Just some quick feat and magic ideas...

Here are two OGL feats and a spell that I found that I think I am going to use in NeoExodus.  What do you think about them? Let me know.

Spirit Aura [General]
The character gains a stronger influence over the spirit world.
Prerequisite: Spirit Sight.
Benefit: The character is able to more potently affect spirit creatures (ethereal, incorporeal and fey.) She receives a +2 attack bonus against them in combat and a +2 saving throw bonus to resist their powers and magic.

Spirit Sight [General]
The character can see invisible or obfuscated spirits.
Benefit: By concentrating on the world around her, the character may see on creatures others normally cannot, namely the ghostly and spiritual creatures. The character must make a Concentration skill check (DC 10 + the creature’s HD) to notice them. This feat only works for the following physical states and creatures: ethereal, incorporeal and fey.

Flash Flood
Evocation [Water]
Level: Drd 6, Sor/Wiz 5, Water 6
Components: V, S, M/DF
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Long (400 ft. + 40 ft./level)
Area: 30 ft. wide, 200 ft. in length
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Reflex
Spell Resistance: Yes
The ground cracks open and a torrential flood of water rushes in the direction the spellcaster specifies, causing 5d6 points of damage to any creature in its path. If the creature fails to make his Reflex save he is swept off his feet, tumbling 10d10 feet down the flood path and suffering an additional 5d6 points of damage.
Arcane Material Component: Bones of an animal found in a dry riverbed.

If you put any of our products on your Wish List from us, then Sunday is the day to buy it. Only this Sunday! Only at RPGNow.com! See us here: http://lpjdesign.rpgnow.com!!!

I need to do a Kickstarter project, but I have no ideas to to do... OK maybe only one or two ideas...

If you don't know what Kickstarter is, go check out there site and read up on it.  Best of all, check out  Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple - A Storytelling Game success story. This sells the concept of Kickstarter better than I ever could.  Don't worry I will wait until you get back...

...Ok back? Good. Now I have wanted to do something with Kickstarter ever since I flopped with my first try of getting funding for Obsidian Twilight. Even though this first one sucked with me, I know the power of a good idea and Kickstarter is a good idea.  So I have wanted to go back to do some cool and interesting.  But what should I do?  I have one rally cool idea, but a few factors need to be in place to do them to work, so I have to wait a bit.  But I still have the "bug" to do something cool.  I would like to possibly do Xao: Island of Iron and Silk as a project, but I don't know the interest level in NeoExodus yet ( I mean, I, JP and a few other people know it is a great setting, but not everyone else who plays Pathfinder knows yet).  So I am waiting on that.  Maybe I could do a cool monster book for NeoExodus or just Pathfinder in general.  Maybe I could do a Pathfinder version of the Chaos Effect book I did for OGL Superpowered (This is an idea that Monte Cook started with his Event Book line). I will have to see what I can think of that is worth doing.  Talk to you later...

Just because it has a stat block doesn’t mean I want you to kill it…doesn’t it?

On the phone with creative consultant JP (JP loves his new title at LPJ Design) and I wanted to give the NPCs stat blocks and he suggested we shouldn’t because then people would try to kill them. Now this isn’t the first time that I hear this from JP and other gamers. So I started wondering, does stat blocks mean this is something to kill? I don’t feel that way, but apparently I am in the minority on this though process. I think of something with a stat block as just “something with a stat block” not the next victim in combat. While I don’t know people who are always looking to test themselves against what every combat challenge that might come up, some time I just like to stat things to prove to you how powerful they are above you. The Enemies of NeoExodus: Folding Circle was created with the concept that you can meet these NPCs over the life of a campaign that runs from 1st level to 20th and they will always be a change for you. The “repetitive villain concept” is one of those things that can make a campaign truly epic. Hell, comic books had done this for all the major villains from Doctor Doom to the Joker to Magneto to Darkseid. The more they come back, the more dangerous they become. I personally like that effect. So I want get the readers on this blog’s opinion on this: Just because it has a stat block doesn’t mean I want you to kill it…doesn’t it? Thank to you later…

52 Product to release for NeoExodus from August 2011 - July 2012. Pathfinder fans rejoice!!!

Sounds crazy right? But it isn't.  I have done it before when I was doing M&M Superlink with Mutants & Masterminds (back when it was good) and it was crazy back then. We released products at a rate of one a week for two years!  And with that sale shoot through the roof.  It was a great time to be a PDF publisher.  Now EVERYONE is in the PDF game, but no one is really doing the weekly release schedule (except Super Genius Games) like we used to do back in the day.  So that is why I decided to go back to that.  As a way to get people excited about the 3PP Pathfinder material we are doing here with NeoExodus: A House Divided.

We have hired several new writers, assigned a LOT of work to them and have our artists in order for work. 52 PDF release this year AND roughly 10 Print on Demand releases too.  Come on with all the PDF content we are making you had to figure we would convert some of it to the print on demand market through RPGNow or Lulu at the least, didn't you?. But best of all we have made it a business wide goal for LPJ Design for the upcoming year to get picked up by Cubicle 7, to act as our print broker and distributor of our gaming material to retail locations.  We talked to them in the past and Angus Abranson seemed interested. I guess we are going to have to prove why they should be working with us.  Time to step up our game.  Start saving your money NOW, and get ready for August.  Forget those other campaigns you were thinking about playing, NeoExodus is taking over your gaming table.  Talk to you later...

Upcoming from LPJ Design for Pathfinder for Paizo

Just something for you to look at:

Can you make an living in the gaming industry? First define "living"...

I just read Fred Hick's post "Dear Deadly: Making a Living in the Game Industry" and I agree he is right.  But there is another side to this. The side of what is "making a living"? I live is South Florida where I own a house, two cars, have a wife, one year old son and mother-in-law all living in the same house.  My wife and I do well financially (She's a therapist and I am a graphic design / web designer) and LPJ Design gives me extra money to do a few fun things.  But can I live off of it?  No.

But do I work it like a 40 hours a week job where I get full medical, weekly paycheck, 401k retirement planning, free use of internet, copier fax machine and roughly four and a half weeks off and 2 weeks of sick time? No.  But I do know if I worked the LPJ Design business as well and hard as I work my "real" job the out come would be different. I would have to be my wife and family would depend on it.  If my mortgage was dependent on LPJ Design sales, we would make a lot of products that we currently don't and make them MORE often.

If we go with the 1,000 true fans theory, I only need my fan base to give me $8 per month (the cost of 2 - 3 comic books) each and I would make $8,000 a month for a yearly total of $96,000.  Subtract 60% of that number to cover operating cost, taxes, freelancers, and heath care you leave with $38,400 a year.  Not a HUGE amount of money, but if you are working for yourself at home, that could still be "good" money.  You would be "making a living".  Hell, if you had a $2,000  a month mortgage ($24,000 yearly) You would still have $276.92 coming to you weekly with this formula.

Most of you are saying "I can't live on $276.92 a week! What about food? Gaming materials. Stuff like that!" Well in my case, my wife handles all the other bills like food, lights, electricity, water, car insurance, cable etc. In this situation, I would handle the $2,000 while she handles everything else.  Not the best situation, but you could "make a living" with it.  Hell I know some "small" RPG publishers who are making a living on their RPG business. Gareth Skarka being one.

All you need to do is find 1,000 true fans and convice them to give you money every month. It is that simple. Welcome to the world of business.  I think companies like Kickstarter will be helpful for people to develop business models where they can take some thing that would not normally be seen as possibly and profitable and make it VERY profitable.  Look at  Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple - A Storytelling Game as an example of this.  Fluke? Maybe. But they still raised $24,000 when they only asked for $4,000. Look at  Kris and Scott's Scott and Kris Show who raised  over $64,00 when they only asked for $50,000. Stop saying you can't and figure out how you can.  Talk to you later...

What I am missing: Opening of Paizocon 2011

NeoExodus Chronicles: Debatable Actions -- Giving it away for free on Facebook

Here is something that was originally made for D20 Modern that I updated it for use with Pathfinder.  But I am now wondering if I am going to give this away for free as a beta version and get some feedback on this system we created.  I like this product and I think it could be a very well received product by Pathfinder fans.  But if I do release this, I am only going to release it as a link on our Facebook page.  Kind of a gift for the fans and people who support us.  I am big on supporting people who support us. I think it is important. Not just for the basic reason of doing right to people, it tells us we are doing good work here.  And that is all we are really trying to do, good work.  So join us on Facebook and you can get a free beta copy of Debatable Actions coming this weekend. It's just that simple.  Talk to you later...

In business as with life, believe nothing what you hear and 50% of what you see...

I think too many people have ASSUMED who I would become partners with based on what they would like to see or from the press release and not what would be best for LPJ Design. Many of the business that were named in the original press release, LPJ Design has acquired a minority stake in a Third Party Publisher of Pathfinder Material, have strong following, fan bases and distinctive business focus.  Just like with LPJ Design. We have our own strong following, fan bases and distinctive business focus and for LPJ Design to look for a business partnership we would partner with someone who as the ability to grow and develop their strengths.  Someone who can develop their following and learn about the RPG business and the PDF business (since they are TWO different things).  Like Friedrich Nietzsche say, one cannot fly into flying.

Strong companies are built day by day, and sale by sale. Better yet, great companies are built by have the correct foundation and building on top of that.  While I do like a lot of things about this company, might still have to break them down to the base foundation and start from the ground up to make sure they can have a long and successful life as a RPG publisher.  Working hard AND working smart are at the core of any good business   Talk to you later...

[Business News] LPJ Design has acquired a minority stake in a Third Party Publisher of Pathfinder Material

What does that mean in plain English? Basically it means I have put some of LPJ Design money into another company to have some percentage of ownership which entitles me to a percentage of their profits. What does that mean for LPJ Design? Really nothing on a day to day basis. We will not be changing anything with what we do with LPJ Design. I have minority stake in this company because it offers me access to some things that LPJ Design doesn’t. Better yet it gives me the ability to build another source of income for my business which in turn makes the RPG industry stronger. Plus I can do a few projects that might fit well with the LPJ Design without directly attaching it to LPJ Design, like if they were doing a setting that might be a good idea but not very “LPJ Design”-ish.

Now the big question a few are asking is, Who is the 3PP did LPJ Design purchase a minority stake in? Was it Rite Publishing? 4 Winds Fantasy Publishing? Open Design? Jon Brazer Enterprises? Super Genius Games? Well who ever it is there is one thing you can say for certain, The artwork and graphic design is going to look beautiful! Talk to you later…
